314 pages, paperback.

This well written story will transport you to a fascinating community in Ireland. We learn of the customs and way of daily life. As can be expected, there were brief instances of drunkenness, as well as some romantic descriptions.

There are two families we get to know fairly well. The first family includes the Matchmaker, Catriona, and her father who live in town. The second family is a farmer, Donal and his young daughter, who are struggling financially while living in the country. We see a little of the difference between the royal residents and the laborers living in the countryside. It is interesting to see how marriages are made and all the effort to find the right match. It was lovely to read about life in Ireland.

*Disclosure - This book was received for review purposes.

Mrs. Whitehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13265603931136498066noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2238850956401536826.post-72047251649463556772023-11-17T10:02:00.002-05:002023-11-17T10:02:13.433-05:00Book Review - Her Secret Hope by Shelley Shepard Gray

Book: Her Secret Hope

Author: Shelley Shepard Gray

Publisher: Revell

289 pages, paperback.

This is my first time reading a book by this author. "Her Secret Hope" is about a young Amish lady, Lilly, who takes a job working as a maid in an Inn in Florida. She had traveled some distance from home to make a fresh start in life. It is interesting to read about her work, what goes on behind-the-scenes in an Inn, and what it's like in the commercial kitchen. The characters are all interesting and it is enjoyable to read about daily life. Lilly meets a nice young man. The friendship is taken slowly and I appreciate how Lilly is cautious about getting too involved too quickly.

Lilly is a sweet, hardworking girl. She has very supporting friends. It is nice to see good things happen to her.

There is a word of caution that a few readers might want to be aware of. There is a very brief romantic description in the story, that comes off as too strong, in my opinion. I would have enjoyed the story much more if this had been greatly toned down or avoided altogether.

* Disclosure - This book was provided for review purposes. *

Mrs. Whitehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13265603931136498066noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2238850956401536826.post-12446321342233737192023-11-17T09:47:00.002-05:002023-11-17T09:47:56.376-05:00Book Review - The Amish Cook's Baking Book by Lovina Eicher

Book: The Amish Cook's Baking Book

Author: Lovina Eicher with Kevin Williams

Publisher: Andrews McMeel Publishing

200 pages, hardcover.

This wonderful collection includes instructions for baking breads, pies, pastries, cookies, and more. It was written by Lovina, who writes a column, from home, called, "The Amish Cook." There is an explanation at the beginning which shares that an Amish kitchen does not contain modern appliances, such as food processors, blenders, or bread makers. Yet the kitchen is stocked with pots and pans and hand-operated utensils.

The photographs of the bread and cookies look incredible. The instructions for each recipe look easy to follow.

There is a quote from Lovina's mother, Elizabeth, from 1998, at the beginning of the bread section:

"While often sliced and served for supper, fresh bread can be found on the table at any meal of the day. I used to make a lot more bread when all of our children were still living at home - usually about nine loaves a week. I would bake the bread before they came so when they got in the door it was good and warm."

On the back cover of the book, there is a wonderful quote by the author, "Baking is something my mother taught me, much like sewing, ironing, or gardening. Now, as a mother of eight children of my own, I am beginning to teach them how to bake. I have many cherished memories of baking throughout my life."

The description of home life scattered throughout, along with color photographs and recipes make the book a treasure. It is beautifully done.

* Disclosure - This book was provided for review purposes. *

Mrs. Whitehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13265603931136498066noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2238850956401536826.post-75395081546665151892023-11-17T09:31:00.004-05:002023-11-17T09:31:36.615-05:00Book Review - The Amish Cook's Anniversary Book by Lovina Eicher

Book: The Amish Cook's Anniversary Book: 20 Years of Food, Family, and Faith

Author: Lovina Eicher with Kevin Williams

290 pages, hardcover.

This is an incredible book of history from the pen of an Amish wife and mother. It includes full color photographs of Amish life, the scenery, the food, and activity of home life. It is charming, and depicts a simple life with a lot of old fashioned hard work.

The author, Lovina, is the daughter of Elizabeth Coblentz, who wrote a newspaper column called, "The Amish Cook." She called them "letters" and shared recipes and letters from home. She sent these to her editor, Kevin Williams, who has compiled this book. After her mother passed into Heaven, Lovina continued writing the column.

This anniversary collection provides a treat as we read about daily life in an Amish home. The book includes the very first column by Elizabeth, from August 1991. Lovina began writing in 2002. The last letter in this book is by Lovina and is written in February of 2010.

The sweet letters are endearing and inspiring. The recipes are wonderful and written in a way that is easy to follow. It is an excellent book.

* Disclosure - This book was provided for review purposes. *

Mrs. Whitehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13265603931136498066noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2238850956401536826.post-89754358293623656892023-09-29T10:08:00.001-04:002023-09-29T10:08:08.113-04:00Lost and Found Book Review

Book: Lost and Found

Author: Suzanne Woods Fisher
The concerns are that some of the choices of their group allows the use of cell phones and other modern (or worldly) devices. This is tempting to their young people and there is a concern they would begin losing members. The bishop considers the idea of moving their entire group to another state. I found this part of the story to be very interesting and a lesson for all of us.

The story mainly centers around dedicated bird watchers who keep logs of their sightings. We see samples of these logs throughout the book. The book also discusses the issue of mental illness.

* Disclosure - This book was provided for review purposes. *

Mrs. Whitehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13265603931136498066noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2238850956401536826.post-42954957965251999972023-09-02T13:52:00.001-04:002023-09-02T14:02:43.849-04:00A Royal Christmas

Book: A Royal Christmas

Author: Melody Carlson

320 pages, paperback.

This story deals with depression. It begins with a tragic accident which I found difficult to read. As the characters started to heal from the effects of the accident, it was very depressing. I had to take breaks from reading because it was a bit overwhelming. However, I wanted to know how the story would turn out so I kept reading.

It was hard for me to believe the characters were Amish because they did
not seem to be focused on home life, but on working outside the home,
etc. (This was probably a misunderstanding on my part.) The story includes information about a health food store, training horses, dealing with the death of a loved one, and recovering from painful physical injuries. Overall the book is well written. It is wholesome, but sad.

The book includes some bonus features in the back. There is a recipe for apple muffins, discussion questions, and a letter from the author about dealing with depression.

Disclosure: "I received a complimentary copy of this book from Barbour Publishing and was under no obligation to post a review."

Mrs. Whitehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13265603931136498066noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2238850956401536826.post-74276906318559950692023-03-28T20:30:00.002-04:002023-03-28T20:38:39.817-04:00Second Time Around - Review

Book: Second Time Around

Author: Melody Carlson

Publisher: Revell

304 pages, paperback.

This delightful story is about Mallory, an older woman with two grown children. She is a busy interior decorator with a lovely Victorian house. After her daughter gets married she feels a stronger sense of emptiness in her large home.

She soon finds out that her grandmother left her some property. It is an old touristy gift shop with an apartment above the store. It is enjoyable to read about her days and getting to know the people in the community.

The description of how she turns the store into a lovely decorating store is inspiring. Even though she struggles with trying to get the apartment into livable condition, it is fascinating to learn about all the trouble it takes to get qualified workers to do necessary repairs. It is nice to read about how she settles into the neighborhood, helping to make it a better place while she develops friendships with her neighbors.

Overall it is a modern story with a wholesome bit of romance.

Bonus: There is a surprise bonus chapter at the end of the story. It is chapter one of Melody's book, "The Happy Camper." I enjoyed this sample. It made me want a copy of that book too!

* Disclosure - This book was provided for review purposes. *

Mrs. Whitehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13265603931136498066noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2238850956401536826.post-82264280426202089652023-01-07T16:19:00.000-05:002023-01-07T16:19:02.710-05:00Life of Andrew Jackson - Review
Book: Life of Andrew Jackson

Through a crisis with the neighbor's health, Vera is brought into contact with a variety of people who all join together for the purpose of making a beautiful Christmas quilt to bring cheer and happiness to their neighbor.

Emma has a good job as a substitute teacher. But she does not have any family to spend Christmas with. Her parents are away, overseas, doing missionary work. She is invited to spend the holiday with her old friend from college. This is a wealthy family, who consider her to be a good friend and a welcome guest. Emma is from humble financial means and is a kind, peaceful, person, who is grateful for each day.

Normally, the family spend the season at their Arizona home. This year, Mr. Landers (the father of her college friend) has organized a house swap for the holiday. They are to spend Christmas in snowy, beautiful, Colorado. Emma's description of the scenery is inspiring.

There is a sweet, wholesome romance that develops between Emma and the
owner of the Colorado house. It was nice to read about their daily
activities, and how some of the guests learned to ski for the first
time.

This is a light, pleasant story. I loved reading about the contrast between the two houses - the one in Arizona, and the one in Colorado. There was also a noticeable difference between Emma and her host family. She was helpful and a peacemaker, just what the the Landers' family needed!

Overall it was an enjoyable, Christmas story.

* Disclosure - This book was provided for review purposes. *

Mrs. Whitehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13265603931136498066noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2238850956401536826.post-14751479728715880582020-03-22T11:44:00.002-04:002020-07-26T16:29:15.649-04:00Faith Over Feelings | COVID-19 Message from Dr. Charles Stanley
Book: The Soul of An American President: The Untold Story of Dwight D. Eisenhower's Faith

Authors: Alan Sears and Craig Osten with Ryan Cole

Publisher: Baker Books

237 pages, paperback

This book is incredibly well-written. We learn a great deal of fascinating history throughout the time period of the life of Dwight D. Eisenhower. We also learn about his tremendous faith in God and why he was very private about his religious life.

In the introduction, we find the purpose of this book:

"Was Dwight Eisenhower an imperfect man (like us all) of genuine faith, or was he a skilled politician who used religion, like so many others before him and since, to further his agenda and popularity?" (page 22)

The main reason this question had come up, was because of the uncommon religious affiliation of his mother. She had converted to a new (and growing) religion while he was still a young boy. She had very different ideas about religion than those of her son. This made it difficult for him.

The beginning of the book shows some sweet and tender descriptions of the family's early religious life:

"David and Ida chose the name Dwight for their new boy in honor of the famous Christian evangelist of the era, Dwight L. Moody."

". . The Eisenhower home still centered around the Bible, with prayers in the morning and evening as well as throughout the day."

"Ike had read the entire Bible by the time he was twelve, and then read it again." (page 35)

We get to read about his marriage and family life as well as the work he did in the military.
There is a beautiful prayer, written by Ike himself, on pages 97 and 98. The prayer was requested by a major in the U.S. Army for a book of prayers he was compiling for the soldiers.

Throughout the book, the authors do an excellent job in explaining Dwight's faith. A great deal of his life story is covered, with a beautiful theme of his faith in God. It is instructive and inspiring.

Author: Elisabeth Elliot

Publisher: Revell

157 pages, paperback

There is nothing like sitting down to quietly read one of Elisabeth Elliot's books. Her gentle wisdom is encouraging and inspiring. In this book she compares, at times, some modern questions of living to what is proper from an earlier generation.

There are 14 chapters. She shares from her own life, and from those of others, to carefully explain each concept regarding disciplines in our lives. Some of these chapters cover the subjects of mind, place, possessions, and work.

I will share a quote from the book, on page 108:

"We should be thankful. Thanksgiving requires the recognition of the Source. It implies contentment with what is given, not complaint about what is not given."

A negative aspect of the book, for me, is that many of the Bible quotes are from sources other than the KJV.

However, in all of her writing, she strives to lead us to a good and close walk with the Lord. She encourages (and teaches) us to have joy and peace in God.
Movie (DVD) - Catching Faith 2 - The Homecoming.

Running Time - Approx. 95 minutes.

This is a dove approved movie, recommended for ages 12 and up.

The Taylor family is facing a few different struggles. Mrs. Taylor is a career - type mother who is focused on trying to do everything, including taking care of her Mother (who is suffering from Alzheimer's disease). Mr. Taylor is a kind man who is patient and is very involved in the daily home life. Their two grown children come home with different news. The son was injured and needs a new direction in his life. The daughter is engaged and is excited about her upcoming wedding.

Everyone has a cell phone, and they live a very modern life. The family appears to have a great deal of money and seem to focus on themselves quite a bit.

The movie has many light moments. They were excited about their goals and plans and seemed to enjoy what they had. There were some occasional bits of good advice coming from some of the characters.

However, I did not particularly enjoy the movie. It is not something I would watch again. There were moments where the events seemed to be predictable. I also did not like Mrs. Taylor's Bible study group. The girls seemed to be shallow and silly. I thought they were disrespectful when talking about Scripture. The group leader, however, presented herself with maturity and respect, which was good.

Special features include: A discussion guide and an activity.

Book: Character Carved in Stone

Author: Pat Williams

Publisher: Revell

215 pages, paperback

This book is about "The 12 Core Virtues of West Point that Build Leaders and Produce Success." I found the chapters to be full of history and very interesting.

The 12 virtues that are discussed each have their own chapter. They are:

1. Compassion
2. Courage
3. Dedication
4. Determination
5. Dignity
6. Discipline
7. Integrity
8. Loyalty
9. Perseverance
10. Responsibility
11. Service
12. Trust

There is an inspiriting history lesson in each chapter, which gives an example of each virtue represented. Some of the people featured include: Ulysses S. Grant, Maggie Dixon, and Dwight D. Eisenhower. Pat Williams does an excellent job in organizing these powerful traits and encouraging readers to understand how these 12 virtues will help them in life. I think the type of reader who would benefit the most from this book are those who are out working for a living, and those who are aspiring to do difficult things in life and want to do them with integrity.
