A laundry schedule is so helpful! I do clothes on Monday, towels on Tuesday, misc items such as rugs or shower curtains on Wed, Clothes again on Thursday, towels and cleaning rags on Friday and bedding on Sat. This has really helped me stay on top of the laundry.

My children do most of the sorting/folding & putting away of the clean laundry. Our favorite time is when I am reading something aloud (usually related to our homeschool).

I have always been terrible at the whole laundry process, from forgetting clothes in the washer to forgetting to fold them and put them away. If they somehow got into my drawers, I'd end up with them allover the floor after trying to get dressed. When we moved in with my in-laws, I asked my mother-in-law to help me. The best tip she gave me was to leave all the piles of dirty laundry in the bathroom where the washer was, and then she showed me how to use the chime for the end of the cycle. My son now helps me load each cycle and my mother-in-law plays with him so that I can fold it all. We also switched to bookcases with bins instead of dressers and now clothes don't end up all over the floor. I didn't learn many home making skills from my own mother, but I'm so glad that my mother-in-law is willing to teach me!

My favorite tip is that I now wash my reds with my blacks in cold water. I have seen no color transfer, and it saves me from doing two loads.

One of my biggest tips is that you don't have to sort everything. I keep towels separate and anything that really needs to be washed on a more delicate cycle, but other than that, it's all in the washer. Why make more work if you don't have to do so? Another is that baby clothes typically don't have to be washed in the expensive baby detergent, and unless you are going to wash all your clothes in the same detergent, your baby will be in contact with it anyway.

Okay, and one more biggie... As a cloth diapering mom that was led astray in the beginning that you have to use special cloth diaper detergents that can be expensive, that is false. As long as you stay away from fabric softener, which can cause repelling issues, regular detergents can be used in smaller amounts. I started using a regular detergent, and then after doing more research was upset to find out that I was doing it "wrong." Went and spent money on several different required detergents, and none worked as well. Finally, I decided to just do what works for us.

I have recently simplified my laundry routine by washing all clothes in cold water. My gas bill has dropped considerably. I use a little bleach on whites occasionally. I also started washing all my colors together unless it is something new which may run. My laundry looks fine and I am saving some money. Dolores (dolores_lynn@yahoo.com)

My best tip is to have some sort of schedule. I'm now doing all of our clothes on Mondays (finishing up on Tuesday if I need to). It means that I keep the washer going all day and makes for a bunch of folding that day, but it's working.

Thanks for the giveaway!

When trying to tackle a big pile of laundered clothes that needs to be put away, I dump the laundry basket on my bed, turn on music and get to work! Goes much faster.

Just came from your other blog and have subscribed to both. Thank you for your time in posting, and in sharing with all of us out here. I enjoy your blog very much. My best laundry tip: Hanging favorite blouses out to dry, I always turn them inside out so the sun doesn't bleach the colors. I do the same to my husbands overalls.

My laundry tip is to sort as you go. I have three baskets for lights, whites, and darks, and my laundry is always sorted when it's time to wash.

My best laundry tip is to use vinegar in the rinse cycle. This eliminates static so no dryer sheets are needed. Thus saving the enviroment a little.
I follow via email already, and follow your blog which always makes me smile!!

I hang my laundry as often as possible so I save money and have a fresh smell. I keep a drying rack on the porch for the little things so they don't get lost in the yard! lol

As a mom of little ones, nothing beats an oxyclean presoak on stained items. It takes out most stains and if anything remains, I use a Fels Naptha laundry bar and a stiff brush which almost always removes any really tough stains. These have saved me hundreds of dollars worth of clothes over the years! (I use a store brand oxyclean which works just as well but is a fraction of the cost of name brand)

I love All detergent and use only the Free and Clear because my husband has such sensitive skin. Because of his sensitive skin, I also only use vinegar in the rinse cycle instead of fabric softener and use aluminum foil in the dryer to prevent static. :)

I don't know if any of my "tips" are that useful. I tried a laundry schedule, but that didn't work well for our family. I just really try to keep on top of the laundry. And now that my kids are helping with their laundry, things are going more smoothly. Even small children can fold wash cloths and socks.

I would like to recommend dryers that have a “refresh” cycle (steam). We did not buy our dryer because of this feature, but I really like it – 15 minutes and the wrinkles are gone!

My best tip is to mot have too big a laundry basket/hamper! If the basket/hamper is too large, you will be able to wait too long to do the laundry. Smaller is better!

My tip to avoid musty towels, is to wash them one time in hot water with 1/2 cup of baking soda-no laundry detergent.

Noelle the dreamer said...

Just like Granny, I like to add white vinegar or baking soda to my laundry. It softens without all the chemicals as we all know. For drying, I like to add lavender sachets to linens and towels, blouses and such. Adding the (empty) bottle cap to the dryer for trousers and such seems perfectly adequate to remove any chance of static.
Summer of course means drying outside on the line and by far is the nicest smell of all!
With Autumn in the air Mrs. White, your room looks so cozy!
Thank you for the giveaway opportunity and blessings to all!

Use white vinegar in the rinse water instead of fabric softener. It takes out soap residue, smells, and is cheaper.

I have found that most loads, even of colors, can be washed on warm, as long as the clothes have been washed at least once before. I've been washing all my clothes on warm for about a year, and I find that it takes the odors out much better than washing on cold.

Hi, Separating the blog is a great idea. I'm writing so many TOS reviews and book reviews, they sometimes overwhelm my humble blog.

I sometimes treat greasy stains with plain old Dawn dish soap.

To make things easy I do laundry on Monday,Wed, Friday. The kids know if you want something clean it needs to be in the wash for those days otherwise out of luck. It took awhile but I don't hear mom my .... isn't clean!

It's made a big difference to teach my kids to stain treat their clothes right when they bring them down to the laundry baskets instead of waiting until I run a load. I find those stains come out much better.

My tip is to tackle your laundry evry day and not wait for it to pile up!

Dena Damron said...

I have started using clean, empty dishwashing liquid bottles to put my fabric softner and bleach in (appropriately labeled) and squirting in just the right amount I need for that particular load of laundry instead of using the product from the original dispenser which lets way too much out.

I set up my ironing board in the living room and as I get the laundry ironed and folded my daughter reads to me. We have been doing this for over 15 years, enjoying the company and reading many great classics together.

I like to sort as the week progresses. My laundry room is not an entirely dedicated space, so when I enter it for another reason I can take a look & see if I have enough of any one color/type of laundry to throw in a load. I feel as though I stay caught up much better that way.
